This Architectural Masterpiece was built in 1857 to have all the hallmarks of a opulent urban Scottish Townhouse, complete with tripartite dormers on the third floor,14 foot ceilings,16 inch baseboards, elaborate moldings, marble fireplaces, grand staircase and ornate ironwork fencing.
A National Historic Site, It was the residence of Jonathon McCully from 1862 until his death in 1877. Born in Cumberland County he was a senator, supreme court judge and a Father Of Confederation. It is said that he wrote the pros for confederation in this very house. With more good fortune this mansion also withstood the Halifax Explosion of 1917 when neighbouring homes were demolished. More recently this property housed Salter Street Films responsible for the sci-fi series Lexx, This Hour Has 22 Minutes, CODCO, Emily Of New Moon, Blackfly and Made In Canada.
Retire to a luxurious private bedroom and bath that may have housed McCully himself, have coffee and breakfast in the rounded kitchen nook that was formally McCully's study and library. Warm yourself in front of the woodstove, relax on the gigantic back deck with views of the bustling Halifax Harbour and immerse yourself in some Halifax history.
